Instructions: Virtual Yoga Nidra

Success – You are enrolled in Yoga Nidra (Zoom)

♥  Welcome! Click here for the Zoom link needed to start class. This link is for you alone – please invite friends to register for themselves.

♥  The class link above will be emailed to you about 45 minutes prior to class time so it’s on top of the email heap. Look in your spam or promotions folder if you don’t see it.

♥  If needed, download Zoom from your app store now. It’s free & easy. Use this Zoom Tutorial to get up to speed.

♥ Please sign in by 6:45 pm if you are new to Zoom.  We will go over a few things like turning off & on audio, video, speaker & gallery view, etc. Here is a Tutorial on using Zoom

♥ Class starts at 7 pm on Monday. “Doors” close at 7:07 for security purposes. You won’t be able to join if you’re late. You will still get the audio after class.

♥ Please review this info on Yoga Nidra to get off to a good start.

♥ Go here for important info on the relaxation pose (savasana), the yoga posture used during Yoga Nidra. It features props to use, alternatives to lying on your back (sideways, sitting, etc.), and how to address some personal conditions like snoring prevention, handling acid reflux, sleep apnea, back pain, hypertension, etc.

♥ Zoom Etiquette

Before Class

  • Find a good place at home for your device (good Wi-Fi connection, etc.).
  • Charge up the batteries on your device.  Plug it in if possible.
  • Get your mat, blankets and pillows out.
  • Cut down on distractions by closing the door, etc.
  • Please arrive a few minutes early to sign in and say hello, just like a regular class. For security purposes, “Doors” close 5 minutes after start time and you will not be able to join in.

During Class

  • Use “Gallery” view if you want to see the others in class who have their ‘video’ turned on. This adds to the community feel. Once class starts, you will see me better by being on ‘speaker’ view which just shows my screen. More about this at class.
  • Security measures are in place to keep us safe.

After class

  • Watch for an email with a link to listen to the yoga nidra practice (not the discussion)
  • Use this link to register for more classes.  It goes to a page to register and pay with either PayPal or a credit card.

Fine Print: Sorry, no refunds for missed classes. You will get a recording of the yoga nidra practice (not the discussion) by email within 48 hours after class for streaming for your personal and non-commercial use only that is valid for 14 days. Stuff can happen since this is “live,” (like the Zoom connection or audio connection/audio is bad, weather interruptions, etc.). You will be notified by email, if possible and ASAP, if a class you’re scheduled for is canceled or rescheduled.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Let me know if you have questions ahead of time. Click here.

Good luck and see you soon!

♥ Julie

Hakini Mudra for Brain-Body Balance, Problem-Solving & Focus

September 7, 2018 by Julie Lusk

The Hakini Mudra for brain-body balance, problem-solving and focus is one of my favorite hand mudras.  It’s very effective and easy to do.

Mudras are yoga positions, gestures, and seals for your hands and fingers that facilitate health, healing, psychological balance and spiritual transformation.  Some mudras use the whole body and breath.  They are effective, easy to learn, practical and powerful, and anyone can do them. Learn more about mudras here.

Hakini Mudra Benefits:

  • Directs the breath, awareness, and energy to the entire body to balance the bodymind physically and energetically
  • Complete and full breathing is facilitated effortlessly
  • Reduces stress
  • The first six energy centers (chakras) are stimulated and harmonized
  • Both hemispheres of the brain are integrated and invigorated
  • Boosts memory, concentration, and assists problem solving

How to do Hakini Mudra:

  • Gently touch the fingertips and thumb of one hand to the corresponding fingertips and thumb on the other
  • Hold your palms apart as if you were holding a ball
  • Place your hands in front of your solar plexus (mid-section)
  • If your fingernails are too long to touch the fingertips together, interlace all the fingers, separate your palms, and touch the tips of the thumbs together

Yoga quotes and sayings by BKS Iyengar

August 29, 2014 by Julie Lusk

BKS Iyengar, an amazing person and yogi left his body on Aug. 20, 2014 at the age of 95.  He will be missed worldwide for his teachings, wisdom, and the joy he shared.

According to information on the B.K.S. Iyengar page, he was born in India in 1918 and taught yoga since of the age of 17.  He has been one of the world’s leading teachers of yoga for over 70 years. His own style of teaching is called “Iyengar Yoga” and it places great emphasis on precision and alignment.  We can thank Mr. Iyengar for introducing yoga props.  Through his work, Iyengar has established the relevance of yoga to the treatment and cure of many illnesses, and has received a Doctorate from the United Nations Charter for Peace.

Lucky for us, his legacy will live on through the many teachers he trained and through his many books. Here are a few yoga quotes and sayings from some of his books including, Light on Yoga, Light on Life, and others.

“I always tell people to life happily and die majestically.”

“Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union — the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”

“Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be.”

“Change leads to disappointment if it is not sustained. Transformation is sustained change, and it is achieved through practice.”

“Be inspired but not proud.”

“In order to find out how to reveal our innermost Being, the sages explored the various sheaths of existence, starting from body and progressing through mind and intelligence, and ultimately to the soul. The yogic journey guides us from our periphery, the body, to the center of our being, the soul. The aim is to integrate the various layers so that the inner divinity shines out as through clear glass.”

“Illuminated emancipation, freedom, unalloyed and untainted bliss await you, but you have to choose to embark on the Inward Journey to discover it.”

“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.”

“It is through your body that you realize you are a spark of divinity.”

“Do not stop trying just because perfection eludes you.”

“The material body has a practical reality that is accessible. It is here and now, and we can do something with it. However, we must not forget that the innermost part of our being is also trying to help us. It wants to come out to the surface and express itself.”

“Action is movement with intelligence. The world is filled with movement. What the world needs is more conscious movement, more action.”

“Yoga is like music: the rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.”

“Spirituality is not some external goal that one must seek, but a part of the divine core of each of us, which we must reveal.”

“One’s spiritual realization lies in none other than how one walks among and interacts with one’s fellow beings.”

“It took me whole decades to appreciate the depth and true value of yoga. Sacred texts supported my discoveries, but it was not they that signposted the way. What I learned through yoga, I found out through yoga.”

“You do not need to seek freedom in a different land, for it exists with your own body, heart, mind, and soul.

Thank you Mr. Iyengar for all your years of inspiration and the giving of yourself!

The New Moon is Dark and Powerful

December 31, 2013 by Julie Lusk

New Moon ~~ New Year Magic

Something rare is happening on January 1, 2014.  There is a new moon on the first day of the year.  What a powerful time for getting a fresh, clean start.  This doubles the significance in making resolutions and setting intentions for the coming month and year.

Here’s how to practice Yoga’s Salute to the Moon. It’s a posture sequence that gives strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.  Why not try it now!

Every month, new beginnings are facilitated during the three days of the new moon.  In her book, The Healing Power of the Sacred Women, Christine Page offers these ideas for getting the most from this potent time.

On the 1st day, take time, preferably at sunset, to sit and decide what stories, experiences, emotions and beliefs you are ready to release and what is complete (Purification). Before you finish with a story of experience, it is very important to ask: ‘What did I learn from the experience? What gems of wisdom can I collect? How have I grown consciously because of the experience?’ Place the gems of wisdom in your heart to be transformed into the light of consciousness.

You don’t need to list everything but could just fill a glass with water and surround the glass with your hands and ask that all emotions/ beliefs/stories which are no longer valuable to your soul, to enter the water. Then stand on the Earth and ask Mother Earth/ the Great Dragon to take these energies back into her waters so you may be purified. Then pour the water on the earth with gratitude and celebration.

On the 2nd day (anytime in the day) spend time [Read more…]
