Yoga Nidra and Sleep

Who couldn’t use some extra shut-eye?  Sleep is vital to our health and sleep experts tell us we need an average of eight hours at a shot.  Even if there’s time for sleep, many of us have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep.  Let’s take a look yoga nidra and sleep.  Yoga nidra can help in replenishing ourselves, can be used as a natural sleep aid, and more.

Yoga nidra  means “yogic sleep” and has many documented benefits for your body, mind, and spirit. It is when your bodymind is actually in deep sleep but with one big difference – you remain consciously aware. This is done by going through a series of techniques to systematically get physically, energetically, mentally, emotionally relaxed.  In addition, yoga nidra sparks intuition, unconditional joy, and a timeless, spacious sense of being.  Witness consciousness is experienced and even surpassed.  Due to the fertile brainwave states experienced, it’s also entirely possible to make positive behavior and personality changes. See the yoga nidra FAQ on setting intentions and sankalpas here.

In fact, while not a substitute for actual sleep, one hour of yoga nidra practice is equivalent to four hours of sleep.  This is due to the series of brain waves experienced along the way.  (Saraswati 1998, Kumar 2008) With practice, you’ll eventually be able to enter the delta brainwave state but remain aware.  It resembles what it feels like to be on the verge of being awake and asleep. The conscious experience of deep sleep is what makes it so restorative and unique.

Yoga nidra can also be practiced at bedtime as a sleep aid.  Layer after layer of stress is cleared out so it doesn’t follow you to bed and disturb sleeping.  Using yoga nidra techniques as a sleep aid should not be confused with the yoga nidra experience itself.  Be careful or you will find it difficult to practice yoga nidra itself and will fall into deep sleep instead.

Yogic sleep is also a play on words of sorts.  It refers to how most of us are walking around “asleep” and unaware of our True Self, the indestructible aspect in each of us that is already peaceful, joyful, wise, soulful, luminous, and loving.  Whereas, the yogi is awake to one’s True Self no matter what the state of consciousness – waking, dreaming, deep sleep.  Realizing this enables us to recognize the true nature of oneself and reality so we are not swayed by the changeability and unpredictability of thoughts, feelings, beliefs and such.  Yoga nidra helps us experience and realize this.

In short, yoga nidra is super sleep!

Understanding OM | AUM

OM |AUM conveys universal peace, harmony, and divinity. Om is the sound vibration of the true Self (Atman) and exemplifies supreme consciousness. The sacred vibration of Om (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain) is similar in sound and meaning to Amen (Christian), Amin (Islamic). Notice how Shalom (Hebrew) and Om Shanti (Sanskrit) share similar sounds expressing peace.

Comprehensive in nature, Om is visualized by the image (yantra) above. It is the cosmic, primordial sound vibration of divine universal consciousness. Like other mantras, it transcends the mind and emotions. Its celestial qualities can be revealed and actualized when one’s body and mind vibrate to its sacred sound through repetition (japa). Repetition can be done out loud to influence us physically, whispered or with one’s lips for a mental-emotional effect, and silently for inspiring one’s higher Self.

Om is naturally heard when breathing out slowly. Start with your mouth open. Breathe out to hear aaahhh. Listen for ooouuu as your lips begin closing. You will hear mmmm when your lips close. Listen to the silent pause afterward.

The full meaning of Om is infinite. Over time, chanting Om and/or visualizing it personally can reveal its significance. Reading about it is helpful but cannot reveal its power. For inspiration, here is some of its meaning and symbolism. Colors are provided to aid understanding of the relationship between the visual and auditory experience of Om.

Written and compiled by Julie Lusk.  Primary sources: Vedas, Mandukya Upanishad, Bhagavad Gita, and Yoga Sutras.  ‘The Secret Power of Yoga’ by Nischala Joy Devi. Diagram and explanation of OM’s symbolic significance by Sreedevi Bringi.

12-Minute Meditation Technique called Kirtan Kriya for Memory Improvement

March 20, 2011 by Julie Lusk

Having and maintaining a good memory is an important ingredient that all of us need and want. Right?  Many of us get concerned when forgetfulness happens to us or to those close to us.  This is particularly troublesome as we age and especially if we have a family history of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.  Try the 12-minute meditation called Kirtan Kriya.

Here is an inspiring video with research to prove that there are easy things we can do for memory improvement with meditation.

Along with the conventional wisdom of good nutrition, supplements and mental and physical exercise, Dharma Singh Khalsa, MD says that meditation is key.  A research study is reviewed that shows increases in brain development for memory, concentration and focus using a simple 12-minute meditation, including a yoga mudra.

The Kirtan Kriya – the Sa Ta Na Ma 12 minute meditation for memory is from the Kundalini yoga tradition.  To get measurable results, it is done daily for only 8 weeks.  But, who would want to stop there.  Not me!

The Sa Ta Na Ma meditation technique also stops the mental chatter to bring about a clear mind.  It’s calming too.

This NY Times article Yoga May Be Good for the Brain  was published June 1, 2016 .  It discusses a study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in April 2016.

A combination of 1 hour of weekly yoga exercise and a daily 15-minute Kirtan Kriya Meditation is recommended to help with memory improvement, concentration and mood improvement (depression).  Improvements were also made in “visuospatial memory, a type of remembering that is important for balance, depth perception and the ability to recognize objects and navigate the world”.  It was compared to another highly regarded brain training program practiced that was practiced for 1 hour weekly with 15 minutes of daily memory exercises.

The yoga + meditation group “topped the benefits of the brain training group”  showing statistically significant results.

Holiday Energizers

December 19, 2011 by Julie Lusk

Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, St. Nicholas, Kwanza, Winter or Summer Solstice, Navidades, Hanukkah, St. Lucia Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s, the holidays can be stressful.

Decide now whether this year will be full of the season’s stressful traps or fulfilling with plenty of treasures to be thankful for.  Take some time to set priorities and make the necessary changes so the holidays are inspiring and energizing instead of a drain.  Pay attention to what your needs and wishes are for your body, mind, and heart while finding the balance with sharing with others.  I hope these Holiday Energizers from Whole Person Associates help you as much as they help me.

Cheers!

Know what goodies will fill you.  What kind of contact will be fulfilling for you?  What kind of gift exchange will be meaningful to you?  What do you need to help your heart and soul feel refreshed?  If you know clearly what you want, it’s easier to choose activities that are likely to satisfy your desires.

Ask for what you want.  Don’t hint.  Don’t wait for someone to read your mind.  Don’t expect others to guess what will satisfy you.  Speak up.  If you’re lonely, ask someone to share your celebration – or ask to share in someone else’s.  If you love surprises, let people know.  If you need time alone in the midst of togetherness, say so.  If you can’t get what you want, want what you get, it’s much more satisfying than wishing for the impossible.
