Blue Moon Rising CD has released!!

October 15, 2012 by Julie Lusk

Miracles do happen!  Synchronicity too!

The Blue Moon of August set the scene for the recording of my newest CD.  This one features 16 beautiful tracks played on the Native American style flute with the sounds of Mother Nature as the backdrop.

The Blue Moon was the day I got a brand new wooden flute from Joseph Whitefeather and Sage Mato. The flute is beautiful and has the most amazing sound.  He promised me that it is a healer.  He was right!  What a welcome surprise it was when the flute music began pouring out of me like a waterfall, so naturally and easily.   It had healed me from the remnants of fear and doubt that had plagued my musicality since I was a kid.  I felt so happy.

I played the flute during my yoga classes the first chance I got.  Folks really appreciated how relaxing it was and commented on its healing sound.   Quite a few encouraged me to make a recording so they could enjoy it whenever and wherever they want.  Here is what is happening.  Marilyn listens to it in her truck. Diana plays it when she gives a massage. Mary listens to it on her daily walk, Susan and her daughter listen on their way to school, several play it before bed, and Kate said that not only does she like it, her dog does too.

To celebrate, Blue Moon Rising is on sale until Nov. 15.  Why wait?

Mouth Yoga

March 4, 2015 by Julie Lusk

According to the yoga tradition, 80% of your problems can be solved with mouth yoga.  That is, what you eat and drink and put in your mouth, what you say, and who you kiss makes a big difference.

Wise yogis ask us to consider 3 things before saying something:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Is it necessary?
  3. Is it kind?
Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh

Practice smiling, whether you feel like it or not, is the advice given by Thich Nhat Hahn, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by the Rev. Martin Luther King,   He said you will feel more positive and at peace.  He says in his book, Be Free Where You Are, he gives us the exercise of “Breathing in, I smile. Breathing out, I release.”

If you’re wondering why you should smile when there isn’t joy inside, he answers, “Smiling is a practice.  There are over three hundred muscles in your face. When you are angry or fearful, these muscles tense up.  The tension in these muscles creates a feeling of hardness.  If you know how to breathe in and produce a smile, however, the tension will disappear – it is what I call “mouth yoga.”  Make smiling an exercise.  Just breath in and smile – the tension will disappear and you will feel much better.”

Belleruth Naparstek calls smiling “affirmations for your face” and promises you’ll start getting smiles back from others.  I call it smile-asana.  Go ahead… and Smile Now!

Smiling may help you live longer.  Wayne State University researchers studied major league baseball card pictures from 1952. They found that smiling players lived an average of 7 years longer than non-smiling players.
Smiling stimulates the brain equivalent to eating up to 2000 chocolate bars or getting up to $25,000 in a study by UK researchers who used electromagnetic brain scans and heart-rate monitors to generate “mood-boosting values.”

Do you have jaw tension?  Do you grip your teeth tightly?  Try opening your mouth and moving your jaw up and down and sideways to relieve tension.  Another method is to rub your scalp around the half-moon circling over the top of your ears.  While you’re at it, rub your outer ears with your fingertips and thumbs for a nice energizer.  Lowering your caffeine levels may relieve jaw tension too. Come on now, let go … and smile!

Do you know what the yoga police say?  “You have the right to remain silent.”

What you see and hear matters too.  Habib Sadeghi writes about a phenomenon called the Illusion of Truth Effect. Basically, it says that repetition increases our mental validation of anything we’re exposed to whether or not the information is true or not.  Hearing or seeing something consistently is viewed as more valid than messages we’re exposed to only occasionally.  A weak message repeated twice becomes more valid than a strong message heard only once, according to research from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Therefore, be careful of the messages you’re being exposed to since repetition matters. Think again about all those political messages and evaluate their accuracy with facts.  Sadeghi offers these recommendations in his article:

1. MAKING WORDS WORK. To consciously harness the power of words for your benefit, start with the ones you’re using.

2. NO NAME-CALLING OR SELF-CRITICISM. Everyone is doing the best they can at any moment in time with the consciousness they have to work with, including you. Be kind and offer yourself the same empathy and compassion you’d extend to anyone else.

3. STOP ALL SELF-DEPRECATION. Never make your body, or something you’ve accomplished, or anything else in your life the butt of a joke. Words have power, and quantum energy doesn’t have a sense of humor.

4. RESIST GOSSIPING AND SPEAKING ILL OF OTHERS. It’s impossible for your words to resonate in anyone else’s body but your own.

5. GO ON A NEGATIVITY DIET. Instead of saying that a meal was terrible say, “I’ve had better.” You’ve basically said what you wanted to say without putting negative energy through your body—you even used a positive word to do it!

6. BOOST THE POSITIVE ENERGY OF WORDS. Instead of saying something like you had a good time at a concert, ramp up the positive energy by saying great, terrific, or fantastic, instead. These feel much better and generate a bigger energetic response in the body.

7. IF YOU HAVE SOME NEGATIVE NOAHS OR NANCYS IN YOUR CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, limit the time you spend with them or find better friends. Negative energy has a way of dragging everything surrounding it in, like a big black hole. Avoid it when you can.

8. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE, UPLIFTING WORDS. Put affirmations on sticky notes around your home and office that say wonderful things about you, your family, or your goals. Wear clothes that have positive messages or phrases on them. Imagine the kind of positive energy you’ll be generating for yourself when you’re wearing positivity all day long. As you keep doing these things, you use the power of repetition in a highly effective way for your benefit. You have the power to change your world, and using words consciously is one of the quickest ways to shift the energy you bring into your life.

Loving Kindness Facelift

October 6, 2017 by Julie Lusk

Many thanks to Dan Leven for sharing this Loving Kindness Facelift.  He was inspired by Sharon Salzberg’s book, Real Love.

As he puts it, “It begins with “may my face be happy, may my face be peaceful.”  And then you continue moving through each body part wishing them well in this way… “may my neck be happy, may my neck be peaceful … may my shoulders be happy, may my shoulders be peaceful,” and so on.   You open your heart’s kindness to your whole body (including your own heart).”

It’s a great way to start and end the day.  I love it.  I really go to town with spreading happiness and peace throughout my entire body.  I enjoy coming up with new places to shower with loving kindness with each practice such as for my brain, blood, eyes and ears – even my hair.  Before long, it’s going out to family, friends, pets, strangers and to all kinds of situations.  This meditation is especially handy when my attention is restless since it lets me jump all around.  It can be any length too – long or short.  It sure feels uplifting.

Dan goes on to explain the science underpinning it.  He says, “the vagus nerve is a core part of our parasympathetic nervous system that has two branches.  One branch is associated with surviving in a perceived life or death situation where our whole body slows down, feigning death (a primitive survival mechanism).  The other branch is about helping us relax and soften into the loving support of others and is associated with the release of oxytocin (the cuddle or bonding molecule).  Both branches are about our relationship to “others, “that being dangerous “others” or safe and loving “others.”

Here’s the kicker he reports, “the vagus nerve has many fibers that connect to our facial muscles where we reveal our emotions through a plenitude of expressions.  Scientists have logged 21 different emotional expressions that register within the face and there are 8 universal emotional facial expressions that you don’t need a translator to interpret.  So our face can register the vagal response from shock and terror, like a deer in the headlights of a moving car (survival vagus nerve), to happiness and peace, like a contented Buddha face (loving vagus nerve)!  However, we can also create the response as we bring happiness and peace to our faces!”

So the KEY point, according to Dan, “is that as you invite or train your facial muscles to discover happiness and peace you are strengthening the relaxation response that’s linked to feeling supportive or loving connection with others -to feeling safe in the world.”

Come on – Give it a shot!

PS.  May you be happy and peaceful!

Yoga quotes and sayings by BKS Iyengar

August 29, 2014 by Julie Lusk

BKS Iyengar, an amazing person and yogi left his body on Aug. 20, 2014 at the age of 95.  He will be missed worldwide for his teachings, wisdom, and the joy he shared.

According to information on the B.K.S. Iyengar page, he was born in India in 1918 and taught yoga since of the age of 17.  He has been one of the world’s leading teachers of yoga for over 70 years. His own style of teaching is called “Iyengar Yoga” and it places great emphasis on precision and alignment.  We can thank Mr. Iyengar for introducing yoga props.  Through his work, Iyengar has established the relevance of yoga to the treatment and cure of many illnesses, and has received a Doctorate from the United Nations Charter for Peace.

Lucky for us, his legacy will live on through the many teachers he trained and through his many books. Here are a few yoga quotes and sayings from some of his books including, Light on Yoga, Light on Life, and others.

“I always tell people to life happily and die majestically.”

“Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union — the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”

“Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be.”

“Change leads to disappointment if it is not sustained. Transformation is sustained change, and it is achieved through practice.”

“Be inspired but not proud.”

“In order to find out how to reveal our innermost Being, the sages explored the various sheaths of existence, starting from body and progressing through mind and intelligence, and ultimately to the soul. The yogic journey guides us from our periphery, the body, to the center of our being, the soul. The aim is to integrate the various layers so that the inner divinity shines out as through clear glass.”

“Illuminated emancipation, freedom, unalloyed and untainted bliss await you, but you have to choose to embark on the Inward Journey to discover it.”

“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.”

“It is through your body that you realize you are a spark of divinity.”

“Do not stop trying just because perfection eludes you.”

“The material body has a practical reality that is accessible. It is here and now, and we can do something with it. However, we must not forget that the innermost part of our being is also trying to help us. It wants to come out to the surface and express itself.”

“Action is movement with intelligence. The world is filled with movement. What the world needs is more conscious movement, more action.”

“Yoga is like music: the rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.”

“Spirituality is not some external goal that one must seek, but a part of the divine core of each of us, which we must reveal.”

“One’s spiritual realization lies in none other than how one walks among and interacts with one’s fellow beings.”

“It took me whole decades to appreciate the depth and true value of yoga. Sacred texts supported my discoveries, but it was not they that signposted the way. What I learned through yoga, I found out through yoga.”

“You do not need to seek freedom in a different land, for it exists with your own body, heart, mind, and soul.

Thank you Mr. Iyengar for all your years of inspiration and the giving of yourself!
