The Art of Traveling

Are you planning a vacation?  Good for you!  It’s important to expand your horizons and take a break from day-to-day routines.

When you pack your bags to explore the beauties of your own country or to travel around the world, consider these keys to a happy journey.  I wish I could give credit for these wise travel tips, but I don’t know who wrote them.  

Travel lightly. You are not traveling for people to see you!Half Dome at Sunset

Travel slowly. Jet planes are for getting places not seeing places; take time to absorb the beauty and inspiration of a mountain or cathedral.

Travel expectantly. Every place you visit is like a surprise package to be opened. Untie the strings with an expectation of high adventure.

Travel hopefully. “To travel hopefully,” wrote Robert Louis Stevenson, “is better than to arrive.”

Travel humbly. Visit people and places with reverence and respect for their traditions and ways of life.

Travel courteously. Consideration for your fellow travelers and your hosts will smooth the way through the most difficult days.

Travel gratefully. Show appreciation for the many things that are being done by others for your enjoyment and comfort.

Travel with an open mind. Leave your prejudices at home. [Read more…]

Advice from a Tree

What an opportunity to experience yoga’s tree pose (Vriksasana) while absorbing the energy from the trunk of this tree.  What a powerful experience to feel into the roots of this tree, to reflect on its life, and to stand where it stood for so many years.  It seemed perfect to pair the photo with “the advice from a tree.” from ‘anon.’  Learn the tree pose below.

stand tall and proud

go out on a limb

remember your roots

drink plenty of water

be content with your natural beauty

enjoy the view

And I’d like to add…

bask in the sun

don’t mind the clouds

provide shelter for birds, squirrels, and other creatures

go with the winds that are blowing through your life

climb a tree once in a while


Practice yoga’s tree pose (vrksasana) to gain balance, core strength, humility, centering, and self-acceptance.

Stand tall. Balance your weight equally on both feet in mountain pose (tadasana). Put your hands on your hips. Breathe. Raise your right foot and press it into the inside of your left leg either above or below the knee. Steady your gaze. Raise your arms up like branches. Wobbling is normal and helpful. Hold for several breaths and repeat on the other side. See the picture above.

Follow your heart’s desire! ~~ Really?

Follow your heart’s desire! ~~ Really?

Here is what Alan Watts has to say about following your heart’s desire in this 3 minute video.  From my own experience, he’s right.  He advises against living a miserable life chasing money, doing what’s not fulfilling you and going after “what makes you itch.”

 

Does his message sound unrealistic?  Unworkable for your life circumstances?  Too good to be true?  It’s not.

This is my story.  A little over 10 years ago, I was managing a multimillion dollar budget while driving 300 miles weekly chasing mostly useless meetings.  Tomorrow, I am flying to Sivananda in the Bahamas  for a 10-day paid trip to teach yoga, meditation, relaxation and guided imagery ~~ my heart’s desire.  And I’m going back there May 23-26, 2013.

Yes, it’s true, but it wasn’t necessarily on purpose.  Life had a way of closing other doors on me (and it wasn’t pretty) until I was pointed directly toward following my heart’s desire.
