Ocean Sounding Breath: Ujjayi Breathing

March 28, 2014 by Julie Lusk

Ujjayi is pronounced oo-JAH-yee or sometimes “ooo” as in cool and “ji” as in hi
Time: 5 minutes or longer

Summary: The Ujjayi Breath, also called the Ocean Sounding Breath, is a yogic breathing practice that builds on the Hilton Head oceanbenefits of Dirgha Breathing, the complete breath. Meditative and calming, it creates concentration while it creates stamina and endurance. It produces a calming and meditative quality. This breath helps relieve sinus problems and can diminish headache pain.

The Ujjayi is performed by taking long, slow and deep breaths (the complete dirgha pranayama) while creating a special sound in the back of the throat that sounds like the ocean waves. Although you will breathe in and out through your nose when doing Ujjayi, it is easier to learn first by breathing through an open mouth while whispering the sound of “home” or “Om.” Doing so will allow you to experience the open feeling in your throat that is used in Ujjayi breathing. When practicing, notice how your lips are slightly open when whispering the “ho” or “o” sound. Also notice the open feeling in your throat. Maintain the open sensation in your throat as the sound changes into “mmm.”

Listen to the sound at the back of your throat as you continue breathing out. Repeat several times drawing out the “mmm” sound more and more each time. This is the Ujjayi sound, a unique, audible Darth Vader-type sound. This same sound and feeling in your throat is used for the inhalation as well.

Next, close your mouth and continue breathing in and out through your nostrils while maintaining that feeling and sound in your throat. When done correctly, there is a slight constriction in the glottis (the opening between the vocal chords) during inhalation and exhalation. Once mastered and the breath is refined, the sound is made by fully relaxing the same area of the throat.

Let’s begin. Either come into a comfortable seated position with your spine erect or lie on your back. Begin by taking long, slow and deep breaths through the nostrils. Allow the breath to be gentle and relaxed as you slightly activatet the back of your throat creating a steady ocean sound as you breathe in and out. The sound need not be forced but it should be loud enough so that if someone came close to you they would hear it.

Gradually, lengthen the inhalation and the exhalation as much as possible without creating tension anywhere in your body, and allow the sound of the breath to be continuous and smooth. Keep the pitch and intensity of the breath consistent and even throughout. Practice breathing so both your inhalation and exhalation are equal in length and duration.

Continue practicing, allowing your inhalations and exhalations to follow a circular flow that is continuous and almost seamless, leaving as little space between the incoming and outgoing breath as possible.

Remember to relax into your breathing; there is no reason to rush. Another breathing pattern to practice after your Ujjayi breath becomes smooth and seamless is to hold the breath for a few seconds at the end of the inhalation and/or at the end of the exhalation. This tends to produce more focus. However, never hold your breath if you have high blood pressure.

The New Moon is Dark and Powerful

December 31, 2013 by Julie Lusk

New Moon ~~ New Year Magic

Something rare is happening on January 1, 2014.  There is a new moon on the first day of the year.  What a powerful time for getting a fresh, clean start.  This doubles the significance in making resolutions and setting intentions for the coming month and year.

Here’s how to practice Yoga’s Salute to the Moon. It’s a posture sequence that gives strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.  Why not try it now!

Every month, new beginnings are facilitated during the three days of the new moon.  In her book, The Healing Power of the Sacred Women, Christine Page offers these ideas for getting the most from this potent time.

On the 1st day, take time, preferably at sunset, to sit and decide what stories, experiences, emotions and beliefs you are ready to release and what is complete (Purification). Before you finish with a story of experience, it is very important to ask: ‘What did I learn from the experience? What gems of wisdom can I collect? How have I grown consciously because of the experience?’ Place the gems of wisdom in your heart to be transformed into the light of consciousness.

You don’t need to list everything but could just fill a glass with water and surround the glass with your hands and ask that all emotions/ beliefs/stories which are no longer valuable to your soul, to enter the water. Then stand on the Earth and ask Mother Earth/ the Great Dragon to take these energies back into her waters so you may be purified. Then pour the water on the earth with gratitude and celebration.

On the 2nd day (anytime in the day) spend time [Read more…]

Follow your heart’s desire! ~~ Really?

February 13, 2013 by Julie Lusk

Follow your heart’s desire! ~~ Really?

Here is what Alan Watts has to say about following your heart’s desire in this 3 minute video.  From my own experience, he’s right.  He advises against living a miserable life chasing money, doing what’s not fulfilling you and going after “what makes you itch.”

Does his message sound unrealistic?  Unworkable for your life circumstances?  Too good to be true?  It’s not.

This is my story.  A little over 10 years ago, I was managing a multimillion dollar budget while driving 300 miles weekly chasing mostly useless meetings.  Tomorrow, I am flying to Sivananda in the Bahamas  for a 10-day paid trip to teach yoga, meditation, relaxation and guided imagery ~~ my heart’s desire.  And I’m going back there May 23-26, 2013.

Yes, it’s true, but it wasn’t necessarily on purpose.  Life had a way of closing other doors on me (and it wasn’t pretty) until I was pointed directly toward following my heart’s desire.

What appeared to be a dream job … [Read more…]

Blue Moon Rising CD has released!!

October 15, 2012 by Julie Lusk

Miracles do happen!  Synchronicity too!

The Blue Moon of August set the scene for the recording of my newest CD.  This one features 16 beautiful tracks played on the Native American style flute with the sounds of Mother Nature as the backdrop.

The Blue Moon was the day I got a brand new wooden flute from Joseph Whitefeather and Sage Mato. The flute is beautiful and has the most amazing sound.  He promised me that it is a healer.  He was right!  What a welcome surprise it was when the flute music began pouring out of me like a waterfall, so naturally and easily.   It had healed me from the remnants of fear and doubt that had plagued my musicality since I was a kid.  I felt so happy.

I played the flute during my yoga classes the first chance I got.  Folks really appreciated how relaxing it was and commented on its healing sound.   Quite a few encouraged me to make a recording so they could enjoy it whenever and wherever they want.  Here is what is happening.  Marilyn listens to it in her truck. Diana plays it when she gives a massage. Mary listens to it on her daily walk, Susan and her daughter listen on their way to school, several play it before bed, and Kate said that not only does she like it, her dog does too.

To celebrate, Blue Moon Rising is on sale until Nov. 15.  Why wait?

Meditation on the Fly

February 20, 2012 by Julie Lusk

Watch this 3 minute video if you ever have trouble keeping your mental focus while meditating.

It shows what happens when a Samurai Warrior takes a sword to a pesky fly.

This lesson on handling distractions is priceless.
