The Art of Traveling

May 28, 2014 by Julie Lusk

Are you planning a vacation?  Good for you!  It’s important to expand your horizons and take a break from day-to-day routines.

When you pack your bags to explore the beauties of your own country or to travel around the world, consider these keys to a happy journey.  I wish I could give credit for these wise travel tips, but I don’t know who wrote them.

Travel lightly. You are not traveling for people to see you!Half Dome at Sunset

Travel slowly. Jet planes are for getting places not seeing places; take time to absorb the beauty and inspiration of a mountain or cathedral.

Travel expectantly. Every place you visit is like a surprise package to be opened. Untie the strings with an expectation of high adventure.

Travel hopefully. “To travel hopefully,” wrote Robert Louis Stevenson, “is better than to arrive.”

Travel humbly. Visit people and places with reverence and respect for their traditions and ways of life.

Travel courteously. Consideration for your fellow travelers and your hosts will smooth the way through the most difficult days.

Travel gratefully. Show appreciation for the many things that are being done by others for your enjoyment and comfort.

Travel with an open mind. Leave your prejudices at home. [Read more…]

Honoring Mother’s Day with Story, Poems & Quotes

May 3, 2016 by Julie Lusk

The idea for Mother’s Day originated in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe, the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”  She IMG_1258believed that peace and equality were two of the most important world causes and challenged women to rise up against war in all its forms.   She wanted women to unite by coming together across national lines to recognize what people have in common over what comes between us in a “Mothers Day for Peace.”  Although this didn’t happen, Julia inspired Anna Jarvisto to start her own crusade to celebrate a memorial day for mother’s in 1907.  The rest is “herstory.”

Here’s to peace and equality for all.  Julia’s declaration follows:

Arise then…women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”

Instructions: Virtual Yoga Nidra

Success – You are enrolled in Yoga Nidra (Zoom)

♥  Welcome! Click here for the Zoom link needed to start class. This link is for you alone – please invite friends to register for themselves.

♥  The class link above will be emailed to you about 45 minutes prior to class time so it’s on top of the email heap. Look in your spam or promotions folder if you don’t see it.

♥  If needed, download Zoom from your app store now. It’s free & easy. Use this Zoom Tutorial to get up to speed.

♥ Please sign in by 6:45 pm if you are new to Zoom.  We will go over a few things like turning off & on audio, video, speaker & gallery view, etc. Here is a Tutorial on using Zoom

♥ Class starts at 7 pm on Monday. “Doors” close at 7:07 for security purposes. You won’t be able to join if you’re late. You will still get the audio after class.

♥ Please review this info on Yoga Nidra to get off to a good start.

♥ Go here for important info on the relaxation pose (savasana), the yoga posture used during Yoga Nidra. It features props to use, alternatives to lying on your back (sideways, sitting, etc.), and how to address some personal conditions like snoring prevention, handling acid reflux, sleep apnea, back pain, hypertension, etc.

♥ Zoom Etiquette

Before Class

  • Find a good place at home for your device (good Wi-Fi connection, etc.).
  • Charge up the batteries on your device.  Plug it in if possible.
  • Get your mat, blankets and pillows out.
  • Cut down on distractions by closing the door, etc.
  • Please arrive a few minutes early to sign in and say hello, just like a regular class. For security purposes, “Doors” close 5 minutes after start time and you will not be able to join in.

During Class

  • Use “Gallery” view if you want to see the others in class who have their ‘video’ turned on. This adds to the community feel. Once class starts, you will see me better by being on ‘speaker’ view which just shows my screen. More about this at class.
  • Security measures are in place to keep us safe.

After class

  • Watch for an email with a link to listen to the yoga nidra practice (not the discussion)
  • Use this link to register for more classes.  It goes to a page to register and pay with either PayPal or a credit card.

Fine Print: Sorry, no refunds for missed classes. You will get a recording of the yoga nidra practice (not the discussion) by email within 48 hours after class for streaming for your personal and non-commercial use only that is valid for 14 days. Stuff can happen since this is “live,” (like the Zoom connection or audio connection/audio is bad, weather interruptions, etc.). You will be notified by email, if possible and ASAP, if a class you’re scheduled for is canceled or rescheduled.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Let me know if you have questions ahead of time. Click here.

Good luck and see you soon!

♥ Julie

Testimonials

Here’s what 3 graduates want you to know…Yoga Alliance E-RYT-500

♥ I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for the most wonderful weekend of downtime, stress relief, and improve-my-quality-of-life time! You have a way of bringing everyone together, making us feel not only welcome, but special.  You have a most awesome positive energy and although you could have a big head with all your successes, you leave your ego at the door and show true concern toward everyone. – Kathleen

♥ I’m grateful for the chance to step out and do this.  This is the first time that I have been able to be still and quiet enough to really consider what the future could look like – an exciting prospect. – Sarah

♥ I am grateful beyond words.  This program will have a positive and lasting effect on my life!  – Les

♥ When I was able (and strong & brave & loving enough) to step away from my stormy life for this program, I noticed I still have so much love & calm & HOPE & strength.  It was just smothered like a perfect, precious gem under a pile of dirty clothes.  It was so hard to see it but it was and always will be there no matter what.  Knowing the jewel is there, under the heap, is so exciting because that keeps the hop. –  Anne

♥  I broke through major barriers in this program.  The people were inspirational.  I gained a part of my broken soul.  It’s OK not to be perfect.  I am enough, just as I am.  – Vickie
