Trouble sleeping? Insomnia is at epidemic proportions and has dreadful consequences.  A few problems associated with inadequate sleep include feeling irritable, exhausted, lowered immunity, poor mental / emotional health, and heart disease.

Relaxing regularly and deeply is the perfect remedy to conquer stress.  The World Health Organization predicts that stress-related disorders and psychological disorders will be the second leading cause of disabilities in the world by 2020.

Guided Relaxation is another tool for your stress relief toolbox. The secret to gaining relaxed energy is to clear away the mental ruckus and emotional debris to make room for clear thinking. One of the easiest ways of doing this is through relaxing the muscular tension held in the body by tensing and releasing muscle groups throughout your body using a reliable technique known as progressive muscular relaxation.  Doing so not only releases physical tension, it also teaches you the felt difference between tension and relaxation. By knowing this, you can catch physical tension early on and before it causes painful headaches, back problems and digestive trouble.  A calming effect for the body, mind, emotions and spirit is awakened as well.

How to Choose a Yoga Class: Getting Started

Incorporating yoga – where and who. Yoga is being taught in yoga studios, hospitals, complimentary medicine clinics, schools, businesses, churches, athletic clubs and community centers and has become popular with both the younger and older generations.  Classes can be offered to people who are fit as well as to people who are physically ill.  It is especially attractive to “boomers” who want to be active but are no longer interested in exercises that jar the bones, muscles and joints.

How to get started. It’s best to join a yoga class to get off to a great start.  Be sure to select a qualified teacher and a class that fits your needs.  Ask what yoga props may be needed.  Props may include a yoga mat, block, strap, blanket, etc.

Selecting a yoga teacher. The Yoga Alliance has identified minimum training standards for teachers and registers them at the 200 and 500-hour level. Certification courses exist for yoga teachers. Unfortunately, these courses have different standards and some are better than others. Here are some recommendations to consider when choosing a teacher for yourself or to teach a class for clients.

1.    What are his/her qualifications?

2.    How long has s/he been teaching?

3.    Is s/he registered? Certified?  When? By whom? Length of training?

4.    Does s/he practice what s/he preaches?  A good role model?

5.    Who are his/her references?

6.    Are classes gentle or vigorous?

7.    Is emphasis placed on physical alignment? Meditation? Philosophy and spirituality? Geared toward special populations?

8.    What is the class format?

In summary, Hatha yoga can be considered the “original wellness program” because it incorporates so many principles and practices found in wellness and mind/body programs today.  Yoga can be enjoyed throughout a lifetime by a wide range of people.

What is Yoga All About

Hatha yoga is a mind/body exercise which dates back thousands of years to India. The word yoga means “union” or “joining”.  Although there are several branches of yoga (Raja, Karma, Jnana, Bhakti and others) Hatha yoga refers to achieving the union of the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual selves through the practice of physical postures and special breathing techniques.  For those interested, yoga can go beyond the physical exercises to incorporate dietary recommendations, meditation, service to others, philosophy, and moral and ethical guidelines for living.  Yoga is neither a sport nor religion.

Hatha yoga is noncompetitive and emphasizes show, purposeful movements practiced mindfully and in combination with deep breathing.  Yoga can be modified to help people achieve a wide range of personal and fitness goals.  Some styles of yoga are gentle and slow while others are vigorous and strenuous.  Yoga’s benefits include the ability to: [Read more…]

For over 30 years, research has shown how comprehensive lifestyle changes can often halt, and even reverse, heart disease.  Program components include a low fat diet, exercise, social support, and stress management (yoga, guided relaxation, breathing, meditation).  Reversing Heart Disease, Love and Survival, and other books and articles by Ornish contain the details and data you’ll want to have about the lifestyle for a healthy heart.  This yoga series was originally published in Yoga Journal (March 06).

The New Moon is Dark and Powerful

New Moon ~~ New Year Magic

Something rare is happening on January 1, 2014.  There is a new moon on the first day of the year.  What a powerful time for getting a fresh, clean start.  This doubles the significance in making resolutions and setting intentions for the coming month and year.

Here’s how to practice Yoga’s Salute to the Moon. It’s a posture sequence that gives strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.  Why not try it now!

Every month, new beginnings are facilitated during the three days of the new moon.  In her book, The Healing Power of the Sacred Women, Christine Page offers these ideas for getting the most from this potent time.

On the 1st day, take time, preferably at sunset, to sit and decide what stories, experiences, emotions and beliefs you are ready to release and what is complete (Purification). Before you finish with a story of experience, it is very important to ask: ‘What did I learn from the experience? What gems of wisdom can I collect? How have I grown consciously because of the experience?’ Place the gems of wisdom in your heart to be transformed into the light of consciousness.

You don’t need to list everything but could just fill a glass with water and surround the glass with your hands and ask that all emotions/ beliefs/stories which are no longer valuable to your soul, to enter the water. Then stand on the Earth and ask Mother Earth/ the Great Dragon to take these energies back into her waters so you may be purified. Then pour the water on the earth with gratitude and celebration.
